Professionally Cleaned Hardwood Floors

You want to keep your hardwood floors clean and looking good. Like other types of flooring, wood floors should be professionally cleaned and conditioned periodically. Even though you have tried to keep your hardwood floors clean, free of scuff marks, and shining like new. A few dirty spots and an occasional scuff mark might just be there!

There are many reasons that your wood floors become dirty and won't quite shine like new. For instance, entryways can be the most abused floors in your home as dirt, sand, and moisture accumulate – leaving visible, unattractive wear & tear. Regular traffic will eventually show signs of dulling in other areas of your home. That's why it's recommended that your hardwood floors be professionally cleaned and polished periodically.

Hardwood Floor Screen and Recoat

Is your old finish starting to look scratchy and has lost its luster? It may be time for a screen and recoat! Most homeowners have never even heard of a screen (or buff) and recoat, much less know the difference between that and sand and refinish. That's why we, Imbue Cleaning Solutions nerds/experts, are here: to answer questions you never even knew you should have about your hardwood floors. Isn't that exciting?

What is Screen and Recoat, and How is it Different from Sand and Refinish?

A screen and recoat abrade only the polyurethane top layer from hardwood floors; we then apply a new topcoat (or two). Sanding and refinishing take off all layers of finish, so all that remains is raw wood. Sanding and refinishing remove superficial scratches and deep gouges, and it offers the chance to change the color and finish of the hardwood floors.

The Purpose of a Screen and Recoat?

We use screens and recoats to refresh hardwood floors and remove superficial scratches and imperfections. We use our buffer to gently rub the bottom, allowing a new coat of polyurethane to adhere to the existing top layer. The unique polyurethane adds luster to floors that have become dull and protects the floor from scratches.

Advantages of a Screen and Recoat

When done correctly, screens and recoats allow homeowners to use their hardwood floors much longer without needing complete sanding and refinishing. While it saves homeowners money, this also extends the life of the floors, as refinishing removes a layer of wood each time we go through the process. Clients can change the sheen of their floors with a screen, recoat (go from glossy to a matte finish, for instance), and give dull floors new life. It is a one-day process far less expensive and disruptive than sanding and refinishing a hardwood floor.

Disadvantages of a Screen and Recoat

When we screen and recoat a hardwood floor, it only removes the top layer of finish. It does not repair deep gouges, and it does not allow us to change the color of the floor. For hardwood floors that need a complete overhaul or numerous repairs, sanding and finishing is the best way to accomplish that. We cannot screen and recoat floors finished with a hard wax oil finish; this process only works for those floors finished with polyurethane.

Frequency of Screen and Recoat for Polyurethane-Finished Hardwood Floors

We recommend a screen and recoat about every three years to maintain the finish and keep them looking their best without allowing too much wear.
